Sustainability is a central part of Inside System’s philosophy. We make a living by refurbishing and trading used IT equipment, which together with our customers and suppliers means that we can leave our planet a little greener. Our core competence is recycling and lifetime extension of IT hardware with a focus on sustainability, and here we and the IT industry in general are experiencing an increased interest. It is now seen more often than before that demands are made for all or parts of the IT budget to be used on sustainable IT, i.e., recycled, refurbished and re-certified equipment. And we also know that the hardware can still meet the performance and energy requirements as well as the data needs of the customers just fine.
At the same time, there have been new requirements and measures regarding CO₂ accounting and documentation, so in order to help our partners meet these new requirements in this area, we entered into a collaboration with COWI A/S at the beginning of 2022, with the aim of finding what CO₂ reduction can be achieved by choosing used over new equipment. The collaboration has resulted in us today being able to provide estimated CO₂ savings on the products we buy and sell. It has been an extensive project where a lot of data has had to be examined and calculated, where we have had full confidence that COWI has carried out these analyzes and calculations with the utmost professionalism.

The Average CO2 Savings
CO₂ emission from production, as well as reduction through recycling, is still new territory for many. This also means that there are not many years of solid information available for how individual products down to the component level affect the climate.
It is therefore important to emphasize that the CO₂ savings we provide are estimates. The results are an expression of the average savings associated with the production of a new product. The results are based on available data of several products in each product category. The results are therefore not an expression of an exact CO₂ saving by recycling a given product, but rather an estimate for a product in a given product category. Since the CO₂ savings from recycling products in each product category can vary quite a bit, the results can therefore be used as an estimate.

Data basis
When you have a hard drive, a power supply, a laptop, a phone, or other products, they come in multiple different shapes and forms, they can be made from different materials, hard drives can come with multiple different brackets etc.
To mitigate this, we have weighted a wide selection of different models to calculate average weights to use as a basis for your Co2 savings.
